Lok-Sabha General Election
The 2024 Lok Sabha elections in India have concluded, and the results were announced on June 4. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has emerged victorious, securing 240 seats. Although this is a decrease from their previous tallies of 303 seats in 2019 and 282 seats in 2014, it remains the largest single-party count. The BJP will need the support of its National Democratic Alliance (NDA) allies to form a majority government as they fell short of the 272 seats required for a majority on their own (https://www.oneindia.com/) (India Today).
Key allies contributing to the NDA’s majority include the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) with 16 seats and the Janata Dal (United) with 12 seats. Other smaller partners also contributed to crossing the halfway mark in the Lok Sabha(https://www.oneindia.com/).
The opposition bloc, named INDIA, saw a significant improvement. The Indian National Congress (INC) won 99 seats. Key performances within the opposition came from the Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh with 37 seats, the Trinamool Congress in West Bengal with 29 seats, and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) in Tamil Nadu with 22 seats (India Today).
The elections were held in seven phases from April 19 to June 1, with a record turnout of over 640 million voters participating in the world’s largest democratic exercise (https://www.oneindia.com/) (India Today).
